Oklahoma City, OK – Alabama’s Minkah Fitzpatrick has been named the Jim Thorpe Player of the week for week 6.
Minkah Fitzpatrick, Alabama, Soph, CB, 6-1 201, Old Bridge, NJ. Minkah Fitzpatrick played an intricate role in Alabama’s 19 point win over Arkansas by tying a school record with 3 interceptions including one that was returned 100 yards for a touchdown. In addition to his interceptions, Fitzpatrick also added 5 tackles and a pair of PBU’s.
Honorable Mention Players for Week Six:
Deondre Singleton, Duke, Sr, S, 5-11 180, Dacula, GA. In their 13-6 over Army, Deondre Singleton was all over the field for the Blue Devils with 5 tackles, a tackle for loss and a fumble recovery along with a key interception and fumble recovery.
Marcus Ball, Arizona St, Jr, DB, 6-2 223, Westerville, OH. Marcus Ball recorded a career-best 10 tackles (all solo) in their 3 point win over UCLA. In addition to his tackle mark, Ball also added an interception that was returned for 22 yards to set up an Arizona State scoring drive.
Amari Coleman, Central Michigan, Jr, DB, 5-11 188, Flint, MI. Amari Coleman was a key contributor in Central Michigan’s 3 point win over Ball State with 4 tackles, 3 PBU’s and an interception in the end zone with 1:37 remaining in the game.
About the Jim Thorpe Award:
The Jim Thorpe Award is one of the most coveted awards in college football. The award was established in 1986 and is named after history’s greatest all-around athlete, Jim Thorpe. Thorpe excelled as a running back, passer and kicker on the offensive side of the ball, but also stood out as a defensive back. In addition to his legendary performance on the football field, Thorpe played professional baseball and won Olympic gold medals in the decathlon and pentathlon.
The Jim Thorpe Award watch list is chosen by a screening committee who compile a list of 30-50 players. The list is not final, and players who have outstanding seasons are added as the season progresses. The Thorpe Award Winner is selected from three finalists and will be announced at The Home Depot College Football Awards on Thursday, December 8, 2016 on ESPN.
The Jim Thorpe Award Banquet will be held on Tuesday, February 7, 2017 in Oklahoma City, OK.
