Oklahoma City, OK –Ryan Reid from Baylor has been named the Jim Thorpe Player of the week for week 7.
Ryan Reid, Baylor, Sr, C. Ryan Reid had a standout performance in last week’s 49-7 win over Kansas with a career-best 2 interceptions including one returned 64 yards for a TD. Reid’s 161 interception return yards are the most by any FBS this season and 14 yards short of Baylor’s school record.
Honorable Mention Players for Week Seven:
Patrick Nelson, Illinois, Fr, S. Patrick Nelson led the Illinois defense with 14 tackles (10 solo) in their 24-7 victory over Rutgers. In addition to his team-best tackle mark, Nelson also added 1.5 TFL and a half sack.
Jordan Whitehead, Pittsburgh, Soph, S, Jordan Whitehead was all over the field in Pitt’s 45-31 win at Virginia last Saturday as he started on both sides of the ball and finished with 28 rush yards, 4 tackles and a key 59 yard interception return right before halftime to put the Panthers ahead for good.
Chris Humes, Arkansas State, Sr, DB. Chris Humes filled up the stat sheet in Arkansas State’s 17-7 win over South Alabama with 4 tackles, a half TFL and a scoop and score 60 yard fumble return in the 2nd quarter.
About the Jim Thorpe Award:
The Jim Thorpe Award is one of the most coveted awards in college football. The award was established in 1986 and is named after history’s greatest all-around athlete, Jim Thorpe. Thorpe excelled as a running back, passer and kicker on the offensive side of the ball, but also stood out as a defensive back. In addition to his legendary performance on the football field, Thorpe played professional baseball and won Olympic gold medals in the decathlon and pentathlon.
The Jim Thorpe Award watch list is chosen by a screening committee who compile a list of 30-50 players. The list is not final, and players who have outstanding seasons are added as the season progresses. The Thorpe Award Winner is selected from three finalists and will be announced at The Home Depot College Football Awards on Thursday, December 8, 2016 on ESPN.
